Museum of Primitive Wine Primitivo

In Manduria, the Museum of the civilization of Primitivo wine, located inside the Manduria Producers Cellar, was born with a strong vocation to memory, from the desire, that is, not to lose the traces of a cultural world that was perceived as profound transformation, and therefore at risk of oblivion. However, the search for objects and testimonies that told the worlds in which those objects were alive, functional, and active, was a search for the present, for the contemporary world, objects presented in an evocative underground journey in what were the ancient cisterns of the nineteenth-century cellar, which have now become original thematic settings. In fact, the Museum of Primitivo wine civilization tells us about a past world, but it does so for today, because it is today that we remember, or in some cases discover, different and new ways of living and thinking. This journey into the past among ancient plows and carts is not a nostalgic call, a re-enactment of a now forgotten time, but a careful analysis of the cultural and patrimonial value of the peasant world that the local community can recognize as its own, in which to find the characteristic traits of the cultural heritage, those practices and craftsmanship that still survive, somewhere, but in different forms compared to the past. Agriculture as the identity of a community, as a reminder of its territory, protecting its traditions and enhancing its typical food and wine products: the Museum wants to remember all this with an itinerary open to the public also with tastings of wine and dishes of the authentic gastronomic tradition , during which wine and food are illustrated and told as part of the local history. The Museum thus becomes a bridge between the past and present of agriculture, winemaking and a whole world marked by the rhythm of the gestures of farmers of yesterday and today.
