The city of Manduria, famously founded by the Messapians, presents numerous testimonies of the past within its vast historic center. These include the megalithic walls, surrounded by the remains of the moat that surrounded the city, and the necropolis. The historic center of Manduria develops into a series of narrow and twisted streets that give the visitor the opportunity to look at the precious remains of the past and admire the architectural peculiarities of the place. Among the main monuments found in this area are the Romanesque collegiate church, better known as the Mother Church, the medieval Jewish ghetto, the clock tower, the noble palaces built in various eras and the sections of the ancient city walls Messapian. Recently some archaeological excavations, as has also happened on other occasions given the thousand-year history of the city, have brought to light tombs, vases and coins from the Roman period.
