River

The Chidro River is a small river whose mouth is located on the Ionian coast of Salento in San Pietro in Bevagna, in the province of Taranto, and originates between the Borraco river and Torre Colimena. It is a watercourse that flows underground for about 10 km, until it reaches a source known as the "crater" which is immersed in a nature reserve. From there the river of water runs for a stretch of 500 meters and reaches the sea, near the beach of San Pietro in Bevagna and before flowing into the sea it forms three lakes. The mouth of the Chidro River then flows into the waters of the Ionian Sea, and represents an ideal place for hot summer days thanks to its clear and fresh water. The surrounding setting of green vegetation around the river highlights a contrast of colors and creates a breathtaking scenery together with the brilliant waters of the river. It is also interesting to know that, not far from the mouth, on the seabed in front, valuable sarcophagi from the Roman era lie. Furthermore, the river is frequented by numerous diving enthusiasts, curious to explore this underwater place full of underwater beauty. The legend of Saint Peter the Apostle circulates on this river, in which it is said that the Apostle crossed the river crying, and that the tears he shed turned into shells. The custom of collecting shells by the ancient inhabitants of the area was precisely to remember him and preserve the petrified tears as relics of the Apostle. The temperature of the river water is between 18-20 degrees and the healthy benefits it confers are so many, from hydrotherapy, the cold water of the river also helps to improve blood circulation, regulate temperature and regenerate the body , useful for relieving depression, improving breathing and maintaining healthy skin and hair. An ideal place therefore to feel healthier and happier.
